The Trek: Day 2

I poked my head out of the tent on Day 2 to see Jimbo in full winter gear. The weather must have changed for the worst in the middle of the night without my noticing. I reluctantly stumbled out of the tent to find the conditions much the same as the previous day. Jimbo had to decided to make full use of every bit of kit he had purchased - I continued the walk in a t-shirt and shorts!

The first major visit to the toilet was needed and it wasn’t a pleasant experience - I won’t go into it but i could imagine that the toilet conditions weren’t going to get any better.

After a breakfast of porridge, toast, fruit and tea (the meat eaters had what was to be, their daily intake of weeners) we were on our way. There were further changes in foliage we we ventured through the last of the montane forest and through giant heather and scrubland on our way to reaching Shira camp site at 3,840 metres.

A memorable moment in the day was venturing up and through the clouds to look back and see a carpet of cloud cover below. We had not seen anything in the past day and a half to feel as though we were climbing the tallest free standing mountain in the world until this moment and a truly breathtaking site it was.

A few people were starting to feel the altitude with headaches and nausea setting in by the end of the day but hopefully a good nights sleep should put an end to that.
